Base 1 Student from Base1 enjoyinfg a ride on a specialy adapted bike

Base 1 caters for students with profound and multiple learning difficulties. The Base is divided into four class groups.

All students have individual programmes but many activities take place in a group situation.

The main curriculum areas for Base 1 are:

  1. Communication
  2. Hand skills
  3. Gross motor skills
  4. Awareness of self, others and environment
  5. Sensory work e.g. visual/hearing skills

Communication opportunities, choice and community links are areas of great importance for student in Base 1.
Priority is given to providing opportunities for students to build up relationships with their peers in the Base and other staff and pupils throughout the school.

There is great emphasis on communication to:

1. Provide the students with a communicative environment;

2. Establish how the students are communicating e.g. facial expressions, eye   movements, hand movements etc.

The staff in Base 1 have a strong team identity and work in conjunction with other professionals: physiotherapists, nursing staff, teachers for the hearing/visually   impaired etc.

Links with the community are very important. Each group has regular community outings and many of the senior students have work placements.

The senior group in Base 1 works closely with students in the F.E. Unit in several sessions e.g. outdoor education, country dancing. Great care is taken to provide all Base 1 students with the opportunity of working in different parts of the school and experiencing working in different environments, in preparation for adult life.
